Preparing the crusher for mantle change

Start by planning the change-out during a scheduled plant stop. Lock out all energy sources: power, hydraulics, and compressed air. Clear the feed bin and remove any residual material from the chamber. Inspect lifting equipment, and ensure you have the correct lifting lugs for the mantle. Safe handling is crucial, especially if Eskom outages might interrupt the process.

Check that the chamber is clean and free from old backing compound, debris, or loose fasteners. If your crusher uses a backing compound, prepare it as per the OEM manual. For some models, mantles are bolted, so ensure you have new liner bolts and check torque values with a calibrated wrench.

Seating, setting, and start-up checks

When seating the new mantle, lower it gently onto the head, keeping the alignment marks visible. Use lifting equipment rated for the mantle mass. Pour or inject backing compound as required, avoiding air pockets. If bolted, install the bolts finger-tight first, then torque in sequence as per the OEM recommendation.

Before feeding rock, rotate the mantle by hand to check for freedom of movement. Set the closed side setting (CSS) to the target value, and confirm nip angle is correct. Inspect for any interference or shift in the seating position.

  • Align mantle and seat correctly
  • Apply and cure backing compound
  • Torque liner bolts to spec

First-shift checks and bedding in

On the first run, keep an eye on temperature, noise, and vibration. Check the CSS after the first few hundred tonnes, as settling may change the gap. Inspect for leaks at the backing compound and re-torque bolts as the system settles. Document any abnormal wear or sounds for follow-up. Do not exceed recommended feed size or rate until the mantle is properly bedded in.
