Preparing for toggle plate replacement

Before any toggle change, fully lockout the crusher’s power and hydraulic systems. Isolate at the starter and lock the disconnect. Confirm zero energy state before approaching the jaw. Remove guards and check that the pitman is supported. Use lifting lugs rated for the toggle’s mass. For larger jaw crushers, a hoist or crane is usually required; for small mobile jaws, a two-person lift or bakkie tailgate can handle most toggles under 20 kg.

Thoroughly clean the toggle seat and inspect for seat wear, pitting, or cracks. Replace shims and toggle seats as a set if needed.

Seating and setting up the toggle

Place the new toggle with care, ensuring that it sits flat in the seat. If your OEM design calls for backing compound, mix and pour it as instructed, giving full cure time before any movement. For bolted toggles, torque bolts to the manufacturer’s specified value; never use rattle guns or over-torque. Check toggle alignment and that the toggle is seated at both ends, crooked toggles fail early and can damage pivot seats.

After seating, cycle the crusher manually to ensure the toggle operates smoothly. Turn the flywheel by hand and check nip angle against the closed side setting. Confirm the toggle moves properly through the full swing.

Checks before running the first tonnes

Before you start feeding the crusher, re-fit all guards and make sure no tools are left in the chamber. Start at a reduced throughput for the first shift and listen for abnormal tapping, squeaks, or misalignment. Check toggle seat contact faces for any settling or movement after the first hour. Inspect bolts for loosening after a couple of load cycles. If available, monitor toggle temperature with an infrared gun: hot spots can indicate misalignment or overload.

Document your toggle installation with photos and a note of the closed side setting at start-up. This helps track wear and makes the next changeout quicker.
