Chasing cubical stone in Somerset West

A plant just outside Somerset West needed a VSI tip set that would consistently produce a cubical aggregate profile for Cape road and concrete customers. The site’s existing setup, running through a humid southeaster and typical coastal dust, was delivering flaky stone with too much elongated content. Staff had been adjusting rotor speed and feed, but the issues persisted especially during longer campaigns when wear profiles changed quickly.

Supplying a VSI tip set for shape control

Our team supplied a full set of VSI impeller tips designed for cubical output, focusing on a high-chrome profile with ceramic inserts at high wear points. We matched tip mass across the set to maintain rotor balance, and delivered the parts to site packed for safe offloading with a bakkie. Installation was scheduled during a planned Eskom outage, with the plant team using proper lockout procedures. We advised on checking the tip mounting bolts for correct torque as per OEM specs, and walked the team through even tip wear inspection to avoid product shape drift between shutdowns.

Ongoing practice and lessons for the future

After fitting the new tips, the plant team set up a choke-feed programme with careful feed distribution, keeping the chamber full to promote inter-particle breakage for cubical shape. They stuck to a plan of regular tip wear profiling by mass and visual check, keeping spare sets ready to manage campaign changes. If we tackled this again, we’d bring additional wear buttons and trailing edge shims to fine-tune tip protection, especially for the longer Highveld campaigns or if feed blend varied more. As always, we remind teams to defer to the OEM manual for all critical torque and lift procedures to keep things safe and on spec.
