Button Grid

Wear button grid for bounce zones.

How and why to use the button grid sheet

The Button Grid sheet is a practical tool for plant and maintenance teams to track wear button placement and monitor wear in bounce zones of chutes, hoppers, impact walls and transfer points. These are the high-impact areas where material rebound causes rapid localised wear, especially in tough South African conditions with variable feed and abrasive material. The sheet is ideally filled in by the site fitter, maintenance supervisor or foreman directly involved with liner changes or inspections. Using this sheet helps organise wear data by specific plant areas, so you can plan rebuilds and align button replacement with campaign schedules.

Fields on the button grid and how to fill them

Each field is designed for quick, practical use at the liner face. Fill in the sheet during or after button installation, and update it after major inspections. Record details clearly so they remain useful later.

  • Plant area: Name the chute, hopper or wall.
  • Button layout grid: Mark the actual button positions as installed.
  • Date of install: Write the date buttons were fitted.
  • Button type and size: Note whether round, domed, tungsten, or other spec.
  • Substrate material: Record the liner base (e.g., mild steel, Hardox).
  • Wear check date: Log the date of each inspection.
  • Button wear: Use tick marks, numbers or short notes to indicate condition or loss.
  • Comments: Highlight bounce patterns, high wear spots, or button failures.

Using the grid throughout a liner campaign

Plants use the completed Button Grid to monitor how wear progresses over a full campaign, from fresh install to planned replacement. By comparing the grid at each shutdown or inspection, maintenance can spot patterns: for example, premature loss from certain zones, or new bounce lines forming as feed angles change. This helps improve button placement, choose tougher button specs, or adjust liners for the next campaign. It also supports stock planning so there are always enough wear parts on hand for upcoming shutdowns. To request the latest Button Grid PDF, use our contact form.
