Feed Distribution Checklist
Checklist before you blame the mantle grade.
Purpose and who should use the feed distribution checklist
The Feed Distribution Checklist is a practical worksheet for quarry and plant managers, maintenance teams and crusher operators. It helps you capture key observations on how material feeds into your cone or gyratory crusher, before blaming the mantle or concave grade for poor wear life or throughput issues.
This sheet is filled in during routine inspections, after a liner change, or when performance drops off. It is especially useful during the first days of a new liner campaign and after any changes to the primary crusher, screen, or transfer chute set-up. The goal is to detect feed issues early, so you can adjust chutes, hoppers or feeders, rather than just change wear part specs. It also creates a record to discuss with suppliers and fitters.
Checklist fields and how to use them
Each field targets a specific feed parameter that directly impacts liner life and crushing performance. Take your time to fill these out clearly, with measurements or sketches where possible.
- Feed distribution: Is the feed entering centrally, or is it off-centre or segregated (describe pattern, sketch if needed)?
- Particle size range: Estimate or measure the feed sizes (eg 0 to 180 mm, 40 to 90 mm). Is it consistent with the recommended chamber profile?
- Moisture and fines: High clay, wet feed, or excessive fines can pack the chamber. Note any build-up or bridging.
- Choke feeding: Is the chamber kept full at all times, or are there periods of starved feed (describe frequency and duration)?
- Material drop height and velocity: Is the feed falling from an excessive height or at high speed? Note any signs of liner impact damage.
Using the checklist across a liner campaign
Plants use this checklist as a running log throughout the liner's life, not just once. By reviewing sheets at the end of a campaign, you can spot patterns: for instance, rapid wear on one side often means the feed was biased, not that the manganese grade was wrong.
Supervisors and fitters can compare checklist entries with wear profiles, photos and tonnage logs. This helps isolate feed-related wear from issues like nip angle, closed side setting or tramp events. Over time, you build a record of what works for your chamber and site conditions.
