Martensitic bar stock for impact crushers

Martensitic bar stock is a hard-wearing alloy material commonly used for blow bars in horizontal shaft impactors (HSIs). This steel is engineered for a balance between abrasion resistance and toughness, making it ideal for secondary and tertiary shaping cells at quarries, sand plants, and contract crushing sites. Martensitic bars are often selected for their ability to handle medium-hard rock, recycled aggregate, and construction rubble without cracking under impact.

Typically, martensitic blow bars are specified where operators need more durability than standard manganese but also expect resistance against fracture from tramp iron. Many users opt for martensitic bars with ceramic inserts for extra lifespan, especially in machines with variable feed or where feed material is abrasive and unpredictable.

Stock holding and storage at Sunnyrock and on site

At our Sunnyrock yard in Germiston, Gauteng, we keep a steady inventory of martensitic bar stock, in sizes ranging from 180 to 420 kg per bar, ready for cutting or finishing to your machine’s requirements. Each bar is palletised and separated by OEM profile, with clear tagging for part number and alloy grade. We regularly monitor for surface corrosion and keep bars covered to limit exposure to Highveld rain or dust.

For customers storing on site, we recommend keeping bars off bare ground and under cover. In coastal areas like Durban or Gqeberha, it’s important to protect bars from sea air and humidity by using tarps or storing indoors. Inland, the main concern is dust and temperature shifts, so keep bars elevated on timber dunnage and shielded from direct sunlight to prevent unnecessary surface rust.

  • Store on pallets or dunnage, never directly on soil
  • Cover with waterproof tarps, especially near the coast
  • Tag and separate by part number and alloy type
  • Inspect regularly for signs of corrosion

Choosing and ordering martensitic bars

To help us supply the right bar, tell us your crusher make and model, rotor size, number of bars per rotor, and the required profile (OEM or custom). Mention if you need standard martensitic or martensitic with ceramic inserts, and whether you want finished bars or rough stock for your own machining. Let us know about your feed material and operating conditions; this helps us advise whether martensitic, chrome iron, or another alloy is best.

Martensitic bars suit most mid-range impact crushers, especially where a mix of toughness and abrasion resistance is needed. They are not recommended for very soft, non-abrasive feed, nor for extremely hard, uncrushable tramp. For technical queries or to place an order, use our contact form and our team will help you match the correct bar to your machine and application.
