Alloy Advice

Quarry and recycle alloy questions answered by our team.

Common alloy selection questions from quarries and recycle yards

Choosing the right alloy for crusher and screen wear parts depends on your material and application. Quarry customers often ask whether to go for standard austenitic manganese or a higher manganese content for jaw plates and cone liners. For abrasive quartzite and dolomite, work hardening manganese is still the go-to, but we get plenty of questions about increased chrome content for extra life in severe conditions. Recycle operations, on the other hand, need guidance on martensitic steel and chrome iron for blow bars, especially when dealing with steel rebar or tramp metal in the feed.

Questions often come up around ceramic inserts: when they're worth the extra investment, how they perform under different impact conditions, and whether they're a good match for high-velocity impact in VSI rotors. We are also asked about the trade-offs between wear resistance and toughness, and when to use a hybrid alloy to balance breakage risk and lifespan. Feed distribution, choke feeding, and closed side setting affect wear patterns, so we look at the full crushing chamber profile before recommending an alloy.

What to send us so we can help with alloy choices

To give you the best advice on alloy selection, we need some basic information about your operation. This lets us recommend the right grade and profile for your specific conditions. The more you can send, the better the fit.

  • Crusher or screen make, model, and chamber/profile if possible
  • Feed material type and average size
  • Throughput in tonnes per hour
  • Closed side setting, nip angle, or screen aperture size
  • Known wear problems or breakage history
  • Photos of current wear parts (optional but useful)

What happens after you email us your alloy questions

Once you use our contact form with your details, one of our technical staff will reply, usually within the same working day. We review your application and may ask follow-up questions about operating conditions or maintenance practices. Occasionally, we recommend a quick site visit or a phone call if your questions are complex or if you're seeing unusual wear profiles.

Next steps include discussing available alloy options, expected wear life, and any changes to feed or settings that could help. If you decide to order, we confirm stock holding or lead time for your required parts. All technical recommendations are based on OEM chamber design and established metallurgy. For torque values or safe lifting, we refer you to your OEM manual.
