Crusher prep: safe lifting, lockout, and seating

Before changing out the concave set, lock out the crusher and isolate power at all levels. Clean out any fines or debris from the seating area and inspect the spider and shell for cracks or build-up. Use rig-approved lifting lugs and certified slings to lift segments, keeping body parts clear at all times. Never rely on eyeball fits; check the seat for proud edges or dust packing. Uneven seating causes premature wear and can affect rotor balance.

Backing, bolting, and first tonnes

Depending on your crusher, fit the concave segments dry, with backing compound, or using high-torque liner bolts per the OEM manual. If using backing compound, warm the shell to help flow, but avoid excess heat. Check that liner bolts are torqued in sequence and confirm there’s no movement. After install, check the closed side setting (CSS) is within OEM spec. Run at low tonnage for the first two shifts and watch for settling or bolt loosening.

First-shift checks and settling

At the end of the first and second shifts, inspect all liner bolts and check for any sign of movement at the segment joins. Listen for unusual ringing or vibration, which may point to a loose seat. Recheck CSS and nip angle, and compare against feed size and distribution. Sorting this early prevents costly downtime later.
