Why plants choose Concave Set

Mixing unmatched concave and mantle profiles wastes Mn and scrapes throughput. The set is sold as a geometry decision, not a parts list.

Where concave sets run and why they wear

Concave sets are used in cone crushers, typically in secondary and tertiary plants across mines, quarries and contract crushing setups. You will find them working hard in high-tonnage circuits handling materials like quartzite, dolerite and granite, or in more aggressive recycled concrete jobs with steel rebar. These liners form the static surface in the chamber and work with the mantle to crush the feed as it moves through the closed side setting. The reason concaves wear is constant high-pressure contact with abrasive stone and tramp material. The loss of chamber shape as they wear can eat into your product curve and throughput, so correct material and matching to the mantle is non-negotiable.

  • Hard rock and recycle applications

What’s in the box: grades, mass, and profiles

When you order a concave set, you get a kit matched to a specific mantle profile. This ensures the chamber geometry is correct and reduces the risk of mismatched liners wasting manganese and throughput. Available grades are standard or high alloy austenitic manganese, usually Mn13 or Mn18, but we also supply martensitic inserts for especially tough jobs. Segment count depends on your crusher size, and masses range from 180 to 420 kg per segment. If we have your profile in stock, turnaround is quick; for a new profile or unusual crusher, we cast to order and will advise the current window.

  • Manganese Mn13 or Mn18 as standard
  • Martensitic or ceramic insert options
  • Segmented for safe handling
  • Lead time: stock or cast-to-order

Choosing for South African rock and weather

Across the Highveld and Karoo, abrasive quartzite and granite will chew through liners much faster, so we recommend Mn18 with work hardening properties. Coastal plants need to watch for salt attack on exposed faces, so a slightly higher chrome content or martensitic inserts may pay off. In Joburg and Pretoria, dust packing around the seat can cause uneven wear. Recycle yards handling concrete with rebar must check for impact damage and may need multi-piece concaves for easier change-out. We’ve seen how Durban humidity and Cape southeaster winds bring their own set of challenges in corrosion and fine dust ingress.

  • Highveld: high abrasion, use Mn18
  • Coastal: corrosion risk, consider martensitic
  • Recycle: impact loads, segment choice matters
  • Dust: clean seat before fitting
