Preparing the crusher for mantle change
Before you start, lock out and isolate the crusher. Confirm all energy sources are off, especially on plants with Eskom power cuts. Clean the area around the head and chamber, and check for packed dust or fines that could affect seating. Inspect the chamber for cracks or scoring, and check the condition of the lifting lugs. Use certified slings and spreaders rated for the full mass, never lift by hand or off-centre. Remove the worn mantle, noting the seating and any abnormal wear or damage.

- Inspect chamber and lugs
- Check for dust or fines buildup
- Use correct lifting gear
Seating, backing, and torque checks
Clean and inspect the seating surface. If your crusher uses backing compound, mix and pour according to the OEM manual, ensuring no air gaps. For bolted mantles, always use new liner bolts and torque them as specified by the manufacturer, never guess. Double check the fit, rotate the mantle by hand, and look for binding or uneven contact. Reassemble the top shell or spider only once all items are correctly seated. Record the install date and any deviations from standard procedure for your maintenance log.
- Clean seating surface
- Apply backing compound (if required)
- Use new bolts, torque as per OEM
- Record install details
Commissioning and early checks
After reassembly, set the closed side setting per your circuit requirements. Run the crusher with choke feed from the start, never let it run starved, as this will destroy your new mantle in hours. Monitor the first tonnes closely for temperature or vibration, and check nut torque after cool-down. After the first shift, inspect for seat settling and address any leaks or loose bolts. Early checks save the liner and prevent unplanned stoppages.
