Safe prep and rotor lockout before tip change

Always isolate your VSI’s power source and follow lockout procedures before opening the crusher. Wait for the rotor to come to a dead stop, then check for residual spin. Remove the cover and inspect the rotor body, tip seats, and anvil ring. Use rated lifting tackles or lugs for the tip set’s mass, never improvise with hooks or slings not designed for the weight. If your model uses bolt-on tips, check bolt and thread condition; replace any stretched or scored bolts. For tips needing backing compound, follow OEM mix ratios and cure times.

Seating the new tips and final checks

Clean all contact surfaces before fitting new tips. Debris or dust under the tip seat can lead to rotor imbalance or premature breakout. Torque liner bolts per OEM spec, using a calibrated wrench. If your machine uses wedge or clamp arrangements, check all locking hardware for cracks or distortion. Rotate the rotor by hand before closing to confirm there’s no interference, and check tip gap to anvil distance matches OEM guidance.

Once the cover is back on and power is restored, run the crusher at low speed for the first minutes. Listen for balance issues and inspect for dust leaks or visible vibration. After 30 minutes, shut down and torque-check all fasteners. Only return to full production once all checks pass.

First shift and ongoing monitoring

In the shift after fitment, monitor tip temperature (feel with a gloved hand, never bare). Excess heating can signal rotor imbalance or dust ingress. Check for unusual product shape, which can indicate tip misalignment. At the end of the first shift, inspect for loose bolts, tip seat movement, or abnormal wear marks. Record the installation in your plant maintenance log for future wear tracking.
