Mobile jaw circuits on the move

Tracked jaw plants are designed for hard work in South African conditions, handling everything from Highveld dolomite to Karoo shale. These plants are mounted on tracks, making them quick to relocate between contract sites, quarries or recycle yards. Their mobility is a big advantage, but it means every component must cope with frequent travel, vibration and rapid setup.

A typical mobile jaw circuit comprises a vibrating feeder, a robust jaw crusher and a discharge conveyor. Feed size is usually 300 to 600 mm, but some jaws can handle up to 1 metre, depending on the closed side setting and chamber design. Output is generally a sub-150 mm product ready for secondary crushing or direct sale as G1 or crusher run, but this depends on feed consistency and choke feeding. Many jaw plants include a feed hopper and hydraulic folding for quick deployment.

These circuits are relied on by contract crushers, quarries and sand plants needing fast setup and breakdown. Movement between sites often means less stable ground and the need for strong seat notes to keep machines level and safe.

Where wear and stress build up

Mobile jaw plants concentrate wear at key points because of the repetitive impact and sliding contact between rock and steel. The action in the crushing chamber puts the highest demands on jaw plates. Hard, abrasive feeds accelerate wear at the toe of the fixed jaw and at the nip angle of the swing jaw, especially if feed is uneven or fines are present.

The toggle plate acts as a mechanical fuse, designed to break if tramp metal enters the chamber. This protects the pitman and main shaft, but means toggles can crack or bend with uncrushable objects, especially on mobile plants that encounter unpredictable material.

Feed hopper liners also take a beating from large rocks and loader buckets, showing scoring or gouging where material impacts after a drop. On mobile plants, hoppers are shallower and liners may wear through faster, as loaders work at steeper angles and access is tighter. Regular inspection of all wear zones is essential to avoid emergency downtime.

Jaw Plate Sets, toggles and hopper liners working together

Our stock covers the main wear and safety parts for tracked jaw plants: jaw plate sets, toggle plates and feed hopper liners. Jaw plates are supplied in austenitic manganese steel, which work hardens under impact for longer life, but must be profiled to match the OEM chamber shape and maintain correct nip angle. A poor nip angle can cause slippage and uneven wear, so correct profiling is critical.

Toggle plates are machined for a close fit and supplied with proper seating faces. They need to be installed with the right torque on liner bolts, always following the OEM manual. The toggle must never be replaced with a welded part; it is a safety component meant to fail in a controlled way.

Feed hopper liners come in either wear-resistant steel or polyurethane, depending on the customer’s preferred balance of impact and abrasion resistance. Steel lasts longer on heavy impact, while polyurethane can quieten noise and reduce carry-back. All liners are supplied with safe lifting lugs and marked for correct placement.

  • Jaw Plate Sets: manganese steel, OEM profile, work hardening
  • Toggle Plates: mechanical fuse, safety-critical
  • Feed Hopper Liners: steel or polyurethane, impact absorption

Planning liner changes and stock around production and power cuts

Mobile jaw plants are under pressure to keep moving, so liner and toggle changeouts need to be planned around production targets and site constraints. We recommend profiling jaw plates regularly and scheduling changeouts when the machine is already offline, for instance during Eskom power cuts or when moving to a new site. This minimises lost tonnes and avoids risky one-man quick changes.

Stock holding should cover a full set of jaw plates, one or two toggles and hopper liners for each campaign. Always check lifting gear and follow lockout procedures before changing any part. Campaign planning is vital for busy mobile fleets, as parts can be delivered to any of our showrooms or sent out by bakkie from Germiston for urgent needs.
