Where hopper liners fit in the plant
Feed hopper liners are the unsung protectors that sit at the front line of material flow, installed before the crusher chamber itself. These bolt-on plates line the feed hoppers and chutes of primary jaw crushers and mobile jaw circuits, taking the brunt of the impact as blasted rock, recycled concrete, or sand enters the plant. Without this sacrificial layer, direct feed erodes the more expensive chamber liners, especially in quarries processing hard quartzite and granite on the Highveld or dolerite around KZN. Over time, impact and abrasion at the hopper mouth can gouge, thin, or crack unprotected steel, shortening the life of downstream components and increasing unplanned downtime.
What to expect when you order
Ordering a feed hopper liner from Crusher Consumables means we match the plate to your plant’s chamber profile and wear pattern. Options are available in AR (abrasion-resistant) plate or manganese steel, depending on your material and throughput. Most common profiles and thicknesses are held in stock at our Germiston yard, while custom or less common sets are cast to order with a clear window for delivery. The liner’s mass can range from 180 to 420 kg depending on the width and drop height of your hopper. We supply full chute kits with bolt-on fixings, and all sets include a handoff note for your fitters. We recommend confirming fit and profile before ordering to avoid delays on site.

South African wear conditions
Hopper liner choice is shaped strongly by local geology and plant use. On the Highveld, quartzite and granite are especially abrasive, eating through mild steel in weeks. Coastal plants face salt corrosion and finer sand, while inland sites might contend with tough dolerite or dolomite. Recycle yards introduce steel rebar and high fines, making AR plate the safer choice. In dry Karoo conditions, dust reduces cooling and raises temperatures in the hopper zone, which can accelerate liner work hardening but also risks faster wear on thinner plate. Durban’s humidity and Cape Town’s southeaster require corrosion resistance as well as impact protection. We always recommend a site-specific discussion before finalising your order.
