Wear note
Hopper first, chamber second
Hopper liners are cheap insurance for jaw and mantle life.

AuthorWhy this matters on the plant
Most sites focus on the jaw or the mantle, but the real trouble often starts much earlier in the feed. Protecting your hopper with the right liners is some of the cheapest insurance you can buy for your big-ticket wear parts.
Why the hopper takes the first beating
Every tonne of blasted rock hits the hopper first, not the crushing chamber. Unlined or poorly lined hoppers quickly develop wear patches and weld cracks, especially in the Highveld goldfields and Karoo quarries running harder stone. Chipped hopper floors and walls lead to uneven flow, oversized lumps sticking, and shock loads to the jaw or the cone below. The impact point is usually less than a square metre, so even a 180 to 420 kg boulder can punch through thin steel after a few shifts.
We have seen quarries outside Mbombela running bakkie-loads of patch plates every month when a proper set of wear buttons or plates would last the whole season. It is no use fitting new jaw plates or a fresh mantle if the feed still comes down uncontrolled. The cost of downtime for re-welding a hopper, plus the risk of injuries from lifting plates during Eskom outages, is easily avoided.
Choosing and fitting your hopper liners
The best liner for your hopper depends on the type of rock and drop height. In most sand plants, a pack of wear buttons placed at the impact zone does the trick. For granite or dolomite, consider 400 to 500 HB steel plate or even ceramic-faced liners if the drop is above 2 metres. Hopper liners should overlap each other at the seams by at least 30 mm to prevent lips catching the material. Every bolt and weld should be recessed, flush or sealed, to avoid spillage catching and starting holes.
Check the liner thickness every 90 days, or sooner if you are running recycled concrete or slag. The trick is to measure with a depth gauge at the centre of the impact zone, not just the edges. Replace liners when worn to 8 mm or less, no matter how they look from above. Letting them go thinner risks panel blowout and damage to the hopper shell.
- Use wear button packs for quick, targeted impact protection
- For high-volume sites, fit thick plate with ceramic inserts on hot spots
- Check overlap and recess all fixing points
- Measure liner thickness regularly in the high-wear zone
Feed control and chamber wear
A battered hopper causes poor feed distribution and surging into the chamber. Both jaw crushers and cones rely on steady, even feed to keep the crushing chamber full, which is essential for choke feeding. Choke feeding gives you the best nip angle and ensures the chamber profile works as designed. If you run empty gaps or see lumpy, uncontrolled feed, you will get uneven wear. This leads to early jaw plate scalloping, cracked mantles and even rotor imbalance in a VSI.
We also see higher fines generation and bouncing rocks when hopper liners are missing or loose. This not only wastes energy but shortens liner life everywhere downstream, from cheek plates to screen decks. A good hopper liner lets you build up a consistent material bed, which cushions impact and helps control the closed side setting during a campaign.
Practical steps for South African plants
If you are working in humid Durban or battling the Cape southeaster, keep your liner stock indoors to avoid rust and warping. Always organise a lockout and safe lifting plan before changing any liner, and stick to the right torque on bolts as per the OEM manual. Don’t reuse stretched liner bolts, and check lifting lugs for wear before hoisting panels. For power cuts, plan liner changes for early morning, and keep a basic set of hand tools and a backup torch on hand.
We recommend holding at least one full change of wear button packs and plate sets on the yard, especially for remote sites in the Lowveld or Karoo where urgent deliveries are tricky. When in doubt, send wear photos to our team through our contact form so we can suggest the right fit for your hopper and feed style.
