Monitoring hopper liner wear

Regular inspection of the hopper liner is vital, especially in plants with high impact at the feed point. Use a thickness gauge to check wear at the entry and mid-section of the liner. Look for signs of grooving, pitting, or sharp edges. Any visible crack or deformation means it’s time to rotate or plan a change-out. Keep a log of wear rates per campaign so you can predict change-out windows and avoid unplanned downtime. If wear is uneven, review chute alignment and feed distribution.

When to turn or change your liner

A hopper liner should be turned or replaced when worn to one-third its original thickness, or sooner if you see bolt head exposure or cracking. In most AR plate liners, the first sign of deep grooving at the feed point signals the start of an accelerated wear curve. For manganese, check for work hardening by tapping with a hammer, if it sounds dull, it may not be hardening properly. Always replace as a full set to maintain even protection, and never patch with mild steel as this risks rapid failure and damage to the hopper wall.

Planning, stock holding, and avoiding failures

To avoid running out, plan hopper liner changes alongside major chamber campaigns. Keep at least one spare set in stock, especially for remote sites or during rainy season when transport can be delayed. Most failures are caused by missed inspections, incorrect fitment, or using the wrong material for the rock type. Regular review of wear logs with our team can help optimise both your change-out intervals and liner material selection. When in doubt, consult the OEM manual for torque and fitment details, or call our technical line for advice.
