Typical setup and output for starter plants

A Starter Plant is designed for entry-level crushing operations, especially where operators are new to fine-tuning wear parts and chamber management. These setups commonly feature a single toggle jaw crusher paired with a single deck screen, all mounted on skids or a light frame. Feed is usually direct from a bakkie or compact loader, with raw stone, recycled concrete or sand and gravel fed into the jaw. Discharge passes over the screen to separate finished aggregate from oversize.

Product size is typically in the 20mm to 40mm range, with a closed side setting that can be adjusted depending on the customer’s requirements. The plant is meant for moderate hourly tonnages, perfect for smaller quarries, recycling yards or sand operations. Output is reliable as long as operators respect the nip angle and keep the jaw chamber choke fed, avoiding surges that can stress the toggle and jaw plates.

Wear patterns and high stress zones

Most of the wear in a Starter Plant circuit concentrates on the fixed and swing jaw plates, especially in the lower third of the crushing chamber. This is due to the compression and abrasive action as material is nipped and crushed against the manganese faces. If feed distribution is poor or the chamber is run empty, wear will accelerate unevenly.

The toggle plate also takes strain, acting as both a fuse for tramp metal and a force transfer point with each stroke. Inexperienced operators sometimes overlook the importance of regular toggle checks and grease, leading to avoidable failures.

On the screen deck, stress is focused where oversize hits the impact area or where tension is lost in the media. Wire mesh is common, but in high sand environments, polyurethane mats may outlast mesh, especially if there is a lot of fine, wet feed common in Durban or Lowveld climates.

How our parts support your plant

Crusher Consumables supplies the core wear parts for Starter Plants: Jaw Plate Sets, Screen Media Kits, and Toggle Plates.

The jaw plates are cast in austenitic manganese steel for work hardening, so they become tougher in use. Our kits include both swing and fixed plates matched to the OEM profile for correct nip angle and chamber performance. The toggle plate is engineered as a sacrificial link, protecting the main shaft and pitman if tramp metal enters. Its design allows it to break under excess force, preventing major damage.

Screen Media Kits are available in both wire mesh and polyurethane, cut to suit the deck and aperture specified by your operation. Our plate sets ship with proper lifting lugs and advice on safe installation. Always follow lockout and isolation procedures before handling jaw or screen parts, and consult OEM manuals for torque values when tightening liner bolts.

  • Jaw Plate Set: Swing and fixed for primary crushing
  • Toggle Plate: Sacrificial force-fuse, easy to replace
  • Screen Media Kit: Available in wire mesh or polyurethane, precise fit

Liner change planning and stock management

Effective liner change planning keeps your Starter Plant productive, especially when Eskom power cuts can disrupt scheduled maintenance. Always monitor jaw wear visually and by measuring chamber depth so you can predict when change-out is due. Early ordering avoids downtime, particularly if you’re working far from Joburg or Cape Town and need reliable lead times.

Keep a spare Toggle Plate on hand as these are quick-fail components during tramp events. For screen media, rotate between worn and new kits to extend life and avoid running with fatigued wire or damaged panels. If your site sees regular afternoon power cuts, plan liner swaps for the mornings and use downtime for safe, thorough lockout and replacement tasks.

We advise keeping minimum stock of one complete Jaw Plate Set, one Toggle Plate, and a Screen Media Kit on site. For order or technical guidance, reach us through our contact form.
