Monitoring cheek plate wear

Cheek plates should be inspected at every jaw plate change, or more often when crushing abrasive rock or recycled feed. Log wear progression with photos and note the location of the most severe grooves or scarring. Use chalk or spray to mark the wear line at each inspection, making it easy to spot accelerated loss.

When to rotate or change cheek plates

Some crushers allow you to rotate cheek plates between left and right to maximise life. Change out plates if they are worn below the minimum thickness recommended by the OEM, or if deep grooves threaten the side frame. Never run without cheeks, as even a short period exposes the frame to costly damage. Plan to change plates together with jaw sets for best chamber integrity.

  • Change at jaw plate intervals
  • Rotate plates if the design allows
  • Replace if seating is lost

Planning stock and preventing failures

Keep at least one cheek plate pair in stock for each crusher, especially if you run hard or variable feed. Sudden Eskom power cuts and rapid throughput changes can speed up wear unexpectedly, so holding spares avoids unplanned downtime. If you notice plates failing at bolt holes, cracking near the top, or coming loose, review torque settings and check for misaligned feed or over-tightening. Send us wear photos for a profile review and future campaign planning.
