Monitoring mantle liner wear in the field
Regular visual checks are critical: monitor wear profiles and measure the mantle thickness at set intervals. Uneven wear, particularly on one side, often points to poor feed distribution. Record wear readings and check against the original install dimensions. For mines running hard quartzite or granite, increase inspection frequency. Use a paint marker to track wear lines on the mantle nose and flanks.
- Check for uneven wear
- Measure thickness at intervals
- Track paint marks for progress
When to turn, rotate, or change out
Mantles are not reversible, but heavy profiles can be rotated if the fit allows, which can balance out localised wear. Always change out when the minimum safe thickness is reached, never run past the OEM discard spec, as the mantle may fracture and damage the chamber. Watch for cracks or scoring near the nose; these are signs to change. If your circuit sees frequent tramp events, inspect for mushroomed or deformed mantles, which risk catastrophic failure.
- Change at minimum thickness
- Watch for cracks or deformation
- Rotate if profile and fit allow
Planning your next campaign and holding stock
Use wear data from past campaigns to forecast mantle life and schedule the next change. If you are running multiple crushers or shifting feed types, keep at least one set of mantles and concaves in stock, especially with power cuts or transport delays. Share your campaign plan with us and we can help you organise castings for the next window. Poor stock holding leads to expensive downtime, particularly in remote sites or during the wet season.
